Fun Fact: When I first showed up in Homer, Alaska I didn’t even know what a halibut was. (*gasp*) I know, it’s blasphemy to show up in the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World” and not know much about this world-class fish. But it didn’t take long to get me in the loop.

Within 48 hours of arriving in town I was out on a charter fishing boat catching my first halibut. That captain even offered me a summer job (thanks Daniel!), and as they say, “the rest is history.”

I went on to deckhand on several charter boats and spent winters commercial fishing in Alaska and Oregon before graduating from deckhand to captain status. Fast forward another 8 years (another *gasp* — it’s hard to believe it’s been so long!) and I’m here at another milestone.

I’d like to introduce the Irish Mist, my new halibut charter fishing boat in Homer, Alaska.

The Irish Mist is a legendary fish-killing machine that has been hailing out of the port of Homer for decades. Unlike most charter boats that are capped at taking 6 people, the Irish Mist has the capacity to take up to 8 anglers fishing for halibut, salmon, and rockfish on any given day — and it still offers comfortable inside seating for 8 people plus the crew!

The heated cabin features cushioned seats, a marine head (bathroom) and near panoramic views so you’ll never miss a wildlife sighting.

The spacious back deck is nearly twice the size of many 6-person charter boats and never feels crowded. It also has on-deck seating for ALL 8 anglers, a rare commodity on any fishing boat. That means no more fighting over who gets to sit on the bait cooler!

The size and layout of the Irish Mist is perfect for accommodating larger groups and still offering an intimate setting for one-on-one fishing guidance and instruction with the captain (that’s me!) and deckhand for the best possible fishing experience,

Fully inspected by the US Coast Guard, the Irish Mist delivers a safe, fun, and comfortable experience out on the water. The heavy fiberglass hull handles the waves well when the Alaskan weather rears its frothy head — although we still certainly prefer the calm and sunny days.

Helmed by owner and operator Captain Clay Duda (again, that’s me!). I bring nearly a decade of experience fishing the waters around Homer. 2025 will be my 9th summer fishing Kachemak Bay, Lower Cook Inlet, and the North Gulf Coast (Gulf of Alaska). The boat’s crew also includes a deckhand.

Trips can be catered to any group or skill level. A lot of thought and planning goes into delivering the best possible fishing trip every single day. For many people, this is the trip of a life time, and the Irish Mist crew works hard to ensure your outing is fun and successful. We factor variables such as tide, weather, time of year, and on-the-water knowledge of the fishing grounds to make a unique plan for each trip.

Halibut fishing is our bread and butter, of course. But Kachemak Bay is also home to world-class king salmon, rockfish, and grey cod fishing. Booking a two-species combo trip is a great way to get more bang for your buck and more of a seafood sampler in your freezer, although it does limit time we have to devote to targeting monster-sized halibut. If you’re hoping to reel up that beast as big as you are, then an all-day, single-species halibut trip may be up your alley.
